Bikram Choudhury

Bikram Choudhury was born in Calcutta, India in 1946.

At four years of age, he began studying Hatha Yoga poses under the guidance of his Guru, Bishnu Ghosh. At age thirteen, he was the youngest contestant ever to win the National India Yoga Championship and was undefeated for the following three, consecutive years. He then retired as the undisputed ‘All-India National Yoga Champion’.

At the age of seventeen, a weightlifting accident severely injured his knee and left him crippled. Renowned, Western Doctors gave Bikram very little chance of ever walking again and even advised amputation. However having a true faith in his Guru and a belief in the healing power of Yoga, Bikram returned to Bishnu Ghosh’s school to heal his knee. With the guidance of his guru, Bikram created his 26 posture series and six months later his knee was healed! Bishnu was the first man to scientifically document Yoga’s ability to cure chronic physical ailments and heal the body.

To further prove the power and healing effects of Yoga – Bishnu asked Bikram to start a number of yoga schools in India. The schools were so successful that Bishnu asked Bikram to then travel to Japan and open two more. Bikram has since brought his curative methods of Yoga therapy to the world.
